Integrity Trumps All - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Integrity Trumps All - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Nothing baffles people full of tricks and duplicities more than simple straightforward integrity. So if you have pledged against texting or talking on your cell phone while driving, you shouldn’t do any of these things behind the wheel either: scratch off a lottery ticket, read the Bible, eat a bowl of cereal, change your clothes, or paint your fingernails despite the fact those activities (all of which I’ve seen people do) are not stated in any anti-texting pledge or law. The far end of lacking integrity is breaking the law. There are corporate scoundrels who are involved in insider stock trading, securities fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, bribes, Ponzi schemes, and kickbacks (just a short list of potential options). People steal, cheat, and lie online and off. Experts report that today cybercrime is more prevalent than drug crime. In this day and age, you will be found out. You might go to jail. You will lose trust from family and friends, and you will never get it backâ€"even when you are being truthful. Integrity is pretty simple: show up, get in fast with the truth, let go of the outcome.

Know the Difference Between Micro and Macro Influencer Marketing - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Know the Difference Between Micro and Macro Influencer Marketing - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Audiences are looking for trusted brands who can not only meet their needs, but provide high quality value. You can achieve this by establishing a loyal following and customer base that is highly engaged in conversations on a micro level before moving into macro status. Personal connections online has evolved into both micro influencers and macro influencers.   It’s far easier to connect with the first group, which can open the door later for higher level connections. Connecting Right Influencers for Your Niche As your personal brand moves into the status of a micro influencer, people take notice. This is especially important if you are involved in speaking engagements, publishing, or moving toward macro influencer status. The following is a better understanding on how to leverage each one type of leadership role: Smaller following Micro influencers include individuals or small businesses with a following of anywhere between 500 and 10,000. Macro influencers can have millions of followers, and have established a recognizable branded name for themselves. Recommendations matter In order to become an influencer in the beginning your brand needs a loyal following who will spread the word about your business. Valuable content, videos, storytelling, and active engagement with your audience can all encourage this. Keep tabs as you grow As your brand evolves into a higher status of leadership your audience will have more of an expectation of what you represent and the type of content that is produced. Reputation becomes more important at this stage, which means you need to prepare your audience ahead of time. In order to grow your personal brand you should be connecting with like-minded brands who are where you would like to be and have the same audience for your target market. It takes time to become a macro influencer, but it all begins with those one-on-one connections.

The Benefits of a Summer Job Search

The Benefits of a Summer Job Search Many job seekers have the misconception that searching for a job in the summer months is a waste of time. There is false belief that everyone is on vacation and therefore nobody is recruiting; yet this is far from the truth and ‘retreating’ job seekers are missing out! Although companies maynot be in heavy recruitment mode during the peak of summer, many organizations are still looking to fill open roles.    There is turnover and job development every month of year â€" including July and August! As a job seeker you should take advantage of this quieter time and keep your job search fully activated. Three benefits of a summer job search include: 1. Less Competition. Competition for roles may be down as many people have other priorities during the summer or take a vacation from their job search. This could give you the advantage you need to snag the perfect role or stand out amongst a smaller application pool.  2. Companies Plan Ahead. If a company has anticipated major resource requirements in the upcoming Fall they will look to fill the roles immediately, despite the season. Many companies will want key roles filled well before work activities spike in September so be ready to pounce! 3. Summer is a Social Season. This is a great time of year to network! Here in Calgary there are tonnes of events during the Calgary Stampede, and I am sure your personal summer activities include picnics, Bar-B-Qs, weddings, or other social events that you plan to enjoy. Attend every event with the goal to network, secure new contacts, and spread the word about your job requirements. Finally, if you are applying to jobs without luck, or not seeing as much action in your targeted industry, use your summer wisely to better position yourself for targeted roles and fully prepare for the upcoming peak in Fall recruitment (which catches many job seekers by surprise). Your summer job search checklist: Get your resume ready and eliminate the stress of updating it on the fly when the right role opens up. Polish up your LinkedIn profile and become familiar with LinkedIn’s new site features. Make a list of targeted organizations to research and reach out to. Compile a list of people in your network that you can start connecting with when time allows. Brush up on your interview skills. Compile the best resources for locating jobs.

Why undermining your colleagues is not the way to get ahead

Why undermining your colleagues is not the way to get ahead The world of work can be brutal. Everyone wants to get ahead and move up the career ladder, but the jobs market is increasingly tough. It can feel like we’re competing not just for job openings, but for smaller things â€" being assigned the tasks we like, praise from the boss, the respect of colleagues. The most ruthless employees have started employing a tactic known as “ego mail”, sending emails designed to show up a colleague while making themselves look good, and copying in a senior member of staff. It’s a way of signalling that you’re the most competent person on a team, that you’re doing a good job while others around you can’t measure up. It doesn’t have to be like this. Be supportive, feel supported It’s hard to imagine many people think that actively working to undermine and shame their colleagues is the right thing to do. It’s harder to imagine that it’s helping us to build healthy working relationships with our co-workers. Competitive behaviours like sending “ego-mail” are only going to make us feel isolated and insecure at work. There are much better tactics for getting ahead than resigning ourselves to dog-eat-dog. If you had to choose between a work environment in which everyone was undermining each other and calling out errors to compete for the boss’s favour, or one in which people supported each other to do better work, you’d probably choose the second. For example, if I, a full-time journalist, am on a reporting shift and a colleague spots that I have made a mistake in my copy (which everyone does from time to time), that person can do one of three things. They could leave the mistake there for a manager to spot. They could screenshot my error and send an ego-mail round the entire department pointing out it needs to be changed. Or they could drop me a quick email and point out the mistake, giving me time to go in and change it before it’s spotted by someone more senior. Happily, I’ve got colleagues who tend to choose the latter, and I do the same for them. Equally if I have a question about the work or am not sure whether I’m doing something right, I might rather ask a colleague than a senior member of staff. These are the kinds of interactions that make work enjoyable; the colleague who helps you out by calling in a mistake will often become a friend who you get lunch or go for after work drinks with. It’s a lot less stressful being in an environment like this than an individualistic, competitive one. Friends will push you to go further It might not seem like this is going to do anything to help you get ahead. If you want to move up the career ladder don’t you have to look better than everyone else? Perhaps you do â€" but there are ways that supportive relationships with your colleagues can pay off and help you reach your career goals. The people you work with are the people best placed to help you move up the career ladder, because chances are they have goals similar to yours and are already on their way a few steps ahead of you. You don’t have to feel threatened by that; most of the time you will not be going for the exact same opportunities and can support each other in moving forward with your career the same way you would support each other with work tasks. You can forward on job adverts you think might be good for each other, proofread cover letters and CVs and put them in touch with your own career contacts. Or you could just mention to your boss how well they’re doing and make sure they’re noticed. They will do the same for you. You’ll still be taking good steps in your career â€" and you won’t be undercutting other people to do it. So don’t try and make your colleagues feel small, and definitely don’t send ego-mail. It’s a much better option to pay it forward by supporting your colleagues, and you’ll find they’ll support you in return. Connect with Debut on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for more careers insights.
